Modlin Fortress Tour
There is no doubt that the Modlin Fortress is an unique tourist attraction of Now Dwor Mazowiecki. It is situated at the mouth of Narew into Vistula. The Swedish were the first who discovered its strategic and defensive values and in 1655-1656 they set up here first fortifications called Bugskansen.
In 1806 Napoleon Bonaparte ordered to establish the fortress. In 1811-1812 it was build up thus becoming one of the biggest in Europe. Then bastions and three crown-shaped fortifications were constructed on the right bank of the Vistula river. Next, Russians included the Modlin Fortress to the defense system of Imperial Russia and created the external fortress circuit. The bridgehead in Kazun still remains the only one bastion fortification which has been unchanged since its establishment as it has not been rebuilt throughout the years.
After the November Uprising Russians started reconstruction works and two-kilometers long circuit of defensive barracks for 20 thousands soldiers was built inside French bastion core. In 1883-1888 eight forts surrounded the construction. Before the I World War external line with ten forts contour was built. Polish army defended the fortress three times: during Warsaw Duchy in 1813, in the November Uprising in 1831 and finally in September 1939. The Russian army took an attempt to defend the fortress during the I World War in 1915. Being as old as nearly 200 hundred years, yet the fortress still attracts a great number of tourist both from Poland and all over Europe.
